Cloth Nappies

Before you get your nappy on the bum.

All nappies will have non toxic water washable markers on them….. I’m on tank water AND not every baby reacts the same to every washing powder.
Before you use the nappy, I recommend to prewash your nappy in a standard rinse (you can throw it in with a load of clothes). This will also help boost the absorbency of your nappy. It can take a few washes before you reach maximum absorbency.

Storing dirty nappies

Store dirty nappies in an airy basket (preferably plastic to avoid rust issues). If soiled, remove solids prior to dry pailing. Please DO NOT SOAK your nappies as this can damage the nappy and also lead to ammonia damage.

Washing

Pre-wash nappies every 1-2 days, at 40-60 degrees celsius.
Cold washes ARE NOT sufficient for proper sanitisation of cloth nappies.

Following pre-wash, nappies can be stored in a dry pail for up to 4 days before the main wash. Other small items such as tea towels and baby clothes can be added to “bulk out” your wash to create an optimal load. It should create a “nappy soup” to allow for optimal agitation of your nappies and to get a thorough deep clean.

Main wash should be for the longest cycle your washing machine can do, and be at 40-60 degrees celsius. As a rough guide – you’re aiming for around the 2-3 hour mark wash for a front loader.

Use a good quality mainstream detergent. Soap nuts and other “natural” detergents have been shown not to be effective for cloth nappies.

DO NOT soak, use fabric softener or bleach as these methods can damage your nappy.

Drying

To extend the life of your nappy, do not dry your shells in direct sunlight for long periods of time. This can cause the PUL to delaminate.

Inserts can be placed in the tumble dryer or direct sunlight. However it is not recommended to place shells in the dryer. High heat can ruin your nappy shells.

If hanging shells on the clothes line, make sure to not place stress on the elastics.
